Chinese New Year Lo Hei

Start the Year of the Pig with the auspicious Prosperity Toss - Malaysian and Singaporean style, at Café Malacca.

This traditional Chinese New Year dish is believed to have originated from South China, and became popular in Malaysia and Singapore only since 1960s. It is usually eaten during the first 15 days of the Lunar New Year.

Each of the 20 or more ingredients signifies an auspicious meaning. For instance, raw fish in the dish means abundance and long life; golden crisps signify wealth; pomelo and lime are interpreted good luck and profit, to name a few.

When Lo Hei is served, all participants gather around the table, toppings are added one by one, then topped with raw fish. New Year wishes are recited in a poetic chant in chorus, as the salad is tossed into the air with chopsticks. It is believed the higher the toss, the greater the fortune one will receive.

Come and experience this fun-filled tradition in Café Malacca, from January 25 to February 24, 2019.
